Happy New Year From Glo Sews!

Midnight is approaching and as I ready myself for a brand new year, I can't help but reflect on the year that is quickly coming to an end!  It has been a wonderful year here at Glo Sews.  I have learned so much over the past six months and made so many wonderful blogging friends!  Thanks to all of you that have made me so happy by your many comments and by reaching out to me in friendship!  I know that 2012 will be even better!

I have several favorite posts this year, I guess one of my very favorite would be the very first one that started it all off.  Sewing Again explained a lot about me and where I have been and where I hope to go!  Shirred Dresses covered a technique I yearned to try years ago but could never find the time.  Oh, how much fun that was, it was a long time dream just to try it and I really fell in love with the technique and the dresses I made!  Fit For A Princess was another fun project.  I made a princess dress from the left over tulle I used for decoration at a bridal shower I hosted.  It was so much fun to make and I think my Grand-Niece really loved it!  Free Quilt from Quilt for Kids  was another favorite, not only was it the open door that introduced me to quilting, something I had never done and found I really enjoyed, but it also allowed me to discover the wonderful feeling of creating a special project just for a charity, and a charity that I feel a very close connection with.  Also in that post I spoke of an organization close to my heart...American Sewing Guild.  These are just some of my favorites and I know next year is going to be bigger and better.

I have just a few resolutions for the new year...

1.  I am going to make more projects for charity.  Along with Quilts for Kids, I would also like to donate to Dresses for Africa.  You can learn more about both of these charities by going to Little Dresses for Africa and Quilts for Kids.

2.  I am going to try to be more gracious when someone thanks me for a handmade gift and just say you are welcome instead of pointing out all of the mistakes I have made!

3.  I am going to make at least a few projects with fabric I have before heading out for another fabric shopping spree!

4.  I am going to sew strictly for enjoyment, no stressful ...gotta get this done.. sewing this year!

5. And last but not least, I am going to really work on controlling my diabetes.  I usually do pretty well with it, but I have really let it slide since Thanksgiving ( well possibly Halloween!)

I wish every single one of you the Happiest New Year Ever, and may many blessings come your way!

Happy Sewing!

I've Been Tagged

I have been tagged  by Camille at Crazy Mama's Blog.  I love her blog, it is always such a pleasure and joy to read.  It takes me back to when my five children were small and all the funny things that happen with small children, especially with children and a breast-feeding mom!  Thanks for thinking of me Camille, I hope I make you proud!  LOL

The Tagged Rules are as follows:

1. Post these rules.
2. You must post 11 random things yourself.
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post.
4. Create 11 new questions for the people you tag to answer.
5. Go to their blog and tell them that you've tagged them.
6. No stuff in the tagging section about ‘you are tagged if you are reading this.’    Blah blah blah, you legitimately have to tag 11 peeps!

11 random things about me:

1.  I must watch the news every day!  I am watching it now at 6:00 PM.  I guess I am afraid something terrible will happen and I will not know the very second it happens.  If the local news is not on  then my television in on CNN most of the day. Even if I am not watching it, I want it on "just in case".   I know, obsessive behavior!

2.  I hate to admit that I am getting old.  I just had my 59th birthday and I already know that number 60 is going to be a killer.  I know, I know,  birthdays are better then the alternative, but still!

3.  I rarely cook at home, I am so lucky to have a wonderful hubby that does all of that for me, but sometimes the clean up is worse then cooking...just saying!

4.  I drive a truck instead of a car and I really love it!

5.  I love my computer and all my friends in computer land.

6.  My proudest moments are watching my children interacting with their children.  Ahhh the joys of being a Nana!

7.  I love listening to my Ipod when I sew and when I clean, it makes me feel good.

8.  I often wonder what my Dad would think if he could come back for one day and see all the changes that have taken place since his death in 1972.

9.  If I am not sewing, or watching the news,(honestly I do watch some regular tv) I am usually reading.

10.  I would love to come up with an idea for my own "successful" business.  ( I secretly hate my job!)

11.  I have been known to write poetry, I hope to one day be brave enough to publish some of it.

Camille's 11 questions for me

1. What annoys the heck out of you?
2. What is your favorite junk food?
3. What are your favorite tv shows?
4. What are your favorite movies?
5. What is your New Year's resolution?
6. What do you do to relax?
7. Are you a parent? If so, what are your kid's and/or pet's names?
8. What is your dream job?
9. What was your favorite subject in school?
10. What is your favorite animal?
11. What is your favorite celebrity?

My Answers

1.  One thing that annoys the heck out of me is when the person in front of me in the checkout lane waits until her order is completely finished and then slowly opens her purse, searches for her checkbook, searches for a pen, and then takes forever writing a check to pay for the purchases.  Drives Me Crazy!!

2.  My favorite junk food has to be chips or nuts.  I am a saltaholic, I know how bad it is for my blood pressure, but I just can't help myslef.  I try not to even have that stuff in my house!

3. My favorite tv shows, besides the news lol, are comedies.... The Big Bang Theory, 2 1/2 Men, How I met your Mother and dramas ..... Grey's Anatomy and Body of Proof.

4.  Some of my recent favorite movies are..." The Help" and "Water for Elephants".

5.  One of my New Year's Resolution is to start my regular everyday walks again and to really get serious about controlling my diabetes.  I have let that  slide since Thanksgiving.

6.  I sew or read to relax, but listening to my Ipod also relaxes me.

7.  I have five children and their names are (oldest to youngest) Jinnifer, Carrie, Travis, Nicholas, Zachary. I also have two stepdaughters, Tina and Teresa. I have a yellow lab named Buddy, I also have two cats, Sissy and Scooter Pooter.

8.  My dream job would be to have my own television show demonstrating sewing techniques.  I think that would be so awesome!

9.  My favorite subject in school was English.  You must remember I graduated many years ago so forgive my many grammatical mistakes!

10.  I love dogs and cats, but I think it would be so awesome to live where I could look out of my window and see a kangaroo!

11.  I really don't get into the celebrity thing, they are people just like anyone else and put their pants on the same way, however, I would love to meet Nancy Zieman of Nancy's Notions and Sewing with Nancy, or Martha Pullen of Sew Beautiful Magazine and Martha's Sewing Room.

Questions for those I have tagged:

1.     Do you know how to sew?
2.     Do you go to the movies or wait for the DVD?
3.     What was your favorite gift you received this Holiday Season?
4.     If someone was going to prepare your favorite meal, what would it be?
5.     How many brothers and/or sisters do you have?
6.     Do you live in a small or large city and do you like it?
7.     What is your fondest childhood memory?
8.     What is your first childhood memory?
9.     Do you cook breakfast or just east something quick like cereal?
10.   What, if any, resolutions have you made for the new year?
11.   If you were going to write a book about your life, what would the title be?

Hope your Christmas was Merry!

Me and my girls!
Christmas has come and gone, and a brand New Year is on the way.  Hope your Christmas was Merry and Bright!   I had a wonderful Christmas.  Nothing is better than spending such a special holiday with family!   I love this time of year and having my family near is such a huge part of it!

cousins rough housing with Uncle Zac
The Grands all seemed to love their gifts and enjoyed visiting with the cousins and aunts and uncles!  The adults seemed to love their gifts too!  I have to admit  I loved mine!  I have been without a DVD player forever, I have been watching movies on my small laptop, well thanks to my son and daughter-in-law to be, I can now watch them on my big TV.  How nice that is!
I also received a Kindle Fire! Wow, thanks kids! How great is that. I have been wanting one since Amazon announced the release date. I have a kindle, but it does not display in color, now I can get magazines and actually see them in color. What a huge difference that makes, plus angry birds is a huge favorite of mine, now I can see what I am doing instead of playing it on my Ipod touch, which is a very small screen!

But the very best gift is my Grand that will be here in June. I can't wait! It will be my oldest son's (Travis) and Christa's first. We are all so very excited!
Christa
Showing off the Baby Bump!
Of course the gifts are just a small part of Christmas. It is a celebration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Hope everyone had a blessed day and that the feeling of love and sharing will continue on into the new year!    I Will be back next week with more sewing tips and news. I am going to continue resting and relaxing ( with my new Kindle Fire! lol) and will see you soon.   Love to each and everyone of you and a Very Happy New Year!

Meet Me On Monday...Christmas Edition

Meet Me On Monday....Christmas Edition

This week on Meet Me On Monday, there are 15 questions instead of just 5, the reason is that there will be no edition of Meet Me On Monday for the next two weeks so all the questions will be asked this week and they all pertain to Christmas. This week's questions are:

 1.Wrapping paper or gift bags?
2.Real or artificial tree?
3.When do you put your tree up?
4.When do you take your tree down?
5.Do you like eggnog?
6.Do you have a nativity scene?
7.Favorite Christmas Movie?
8.Favorite Christmas cookie?
9.Where will you eat Christmas dinner?
10.Angel, bow or star on top of your tree?
11.Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
12.Do you like Fruitcake?
13.What are you most excited about the holidays?
14.Do you open presents Christmas Eve or Christmas Morning?
15.Will you still be wrapping presents on Christmas Eve?

Here are my answers:

1.  I use both wrapping paper and gift bags.  I try to always wrap a gift that is for a child, just seems more exciting then pulling something out of a bag, but I have to admit there have been times that I used a bag even for a child when I was running short of time.

2.  I used to always have a real tree, when my children were small we went to a tree farm and purchased a tree, roots and all, and later planted it in our yard.  As our yard begin to fill with X Christmas trees we bought an artificial tree.  I love an artificial tree, sure they don't smell as nice, but the clean up is a breeze and I think they are less of a fire hazard.

3.  When I put my tree up just depends on what is going on.  I really like to put it up the weekend after Thanksgiving, but sometimes (like this year) that just don't happen.  I try to have it up by the 19th.  That is my birthday and I usually have company that day and it is just nice to have my decorations up.  Makes it a more festive birthday celebration.

4.  I take my tree down almost always by the first day of the new year.  I have always heard that bad luck will come your way if your tree stays up any longer.  I guess I am a bit superstitious, huh?

5.  I do not like eggnog.  Maybe it taste wonderful, but I cannot get past the consistency!   There is just no way I could ever drink anything that looks so disgusting!

6.   Yes, I do have a nativity scene.  That has always been an important part of Christmas in my family.  After all Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ.

7.  My favorite Christmas movie has always been "It's A Wonderful Life".  I have to watch it at least once every year!

8.  I don't think a decorated sugar cookie can be beat.  That has to be my all time favorite.  Just the taste brings back a rush of memories from when my children were small and we made and decorated cookies not only for us to enjoy, but to also leave out for Santa. Also more recent memories come to mind of when my daughters and I have made and decorated them with my Grands during my birthday weekend!  Christmas cookies come with such love and joy.   I love Christmas cookies.

9.  My husband and I will eat Christmas dinner at home or at his daughter's house.  Most of our celebrating will be done on Christmas Eve this year, so Christmas Day will be a day of quiet and sweet relaxation.

10.  I have a large crown on top of my tree.  It is red velvet trimmed in gold.

12.  No, I do not like fruit cake.

13.  I am so excited to see my family.  My Children and Grands will be here on Christmas Eve and it is such a happy time, with love and happiness surrounded with wonderful conversations, walks down memory lane, and the joy of the grands opening their gifts.  I love Christmas Eve!

14.  We open our gifts with my family on Christmas Eve.  If the hubby and I exchange gifts we open ours on Christmas morning, but most of the time we buy one large item as a gift to and from both of us, and when we do that, we buy it before Christmas.  We had Christmas with his family this year on Thanksgiving because his daughter came in from North Carolina, on the years that she comes on Christmas we celebrate on Christmas Day, on those years we open gifts both days, Christmas Eve and Day!

15.  I hope to have all of my gifts wrapped before Christmas Eve, but I have to admit there have been times when I was wrapping right up to the last minute on Christmas Eve.  I think that is just way to stressful and I strive to have it all done several days before.

Well that is it for Meet Me On Monday.  I hope each and everyone of you have a Blessed Christmas and a wonderful and bright New Year.

I most likely will not be posting this week, but will be back bright eyed and bushy tailed with a great new post next week.

Merry Christmas!

Meet Me On Monday...12-11-11

Yep it's that time again, time for Meet Me On Monday.  If you would like to join us just hop on over to the Meet Me On Monday post on the Never Growing Old blog.

We hook up each Monday and answer five questions.  It is a lot of fun and everyone gets to know each other just a little bit better.  If you are a blogger you should check it out! Just click the link below.

This week's five questions are:

1.  Tomorrow I'm going to _________?
2.  Pudding or Jello?
3.  What book are you currently reading?
4.  What is the first concert you went to see?
5.  What is your current weather?

Here are my answers:

1.  Tomorrow I am going to get up and go to work and come home and check the day off on my calendar. Friday is my last day of work before my vacation begins so when tomorrow is over I will be one day closer to Christmas Vacation!  YAY

2.  I prefer sugar free jello.  A little jello with low cal coolwhip and I am good to go.  I think it is very refreshing and not too sweet, but add a sugar cookie and wow, it is unbeatable!

3.  I am trying to read "Medicus, A Novel of the Roman Empire" by Ruth Downie, but I have so much to do to get ready for the Christmas holidays that it is very slow going, it is a pretty good book and I hope to soon have more time to read it!

4. Oh My goodness, I really have to exercise my brain to remember my first concert!   Wow this is really going to age me!  When I was a teenager the local radio station put on what was called  WFLI Spectacular of Stars!  The first one I went to had Roy Orbison and  Billy Joe Royal ( among others!)  I screamed my lungs out for Billy Joe Royal!!  Man that was ages and ages ago!

5.  The current weather here is cool, not really bone chilling cold, and a warm up is in the forecast.  Some rain tomorrow and then pretty until Thursday.  Normal weather for this time of year around here.  Still hoping for a white Christmas, but since we had one last year, I don't expect that we will have one.  Only happens about every 20 or 30 years around here!  LOL

Well that it is for this week's edition of Meet Me On Monday.  Hope you all have a great Monday, and I plan to see you again next week!

Happy Monday!

Home Crafted gifts

I had a lively discussion the other day with a close friend about home crafted gifts.  She seems to think that hand made gifts are something that are given when you have little money and can't  actually buy a gift.  I was shocked!   I have been making gifts for people I love for years and I certainly hope they didn't feel that way when I presented the gift to them!

The thought that hand made gifts are something that you do because you lack the finances to buy a gift is ridicules!   First of all you have to purchase the supplies and then donate your time and energy to finish the project.   I think when someone takes the time to make you a gift, whether it is needle work, sewing, or any other craft,  it is a huge compliment.   I know that person had me in mind when she planned the gift, and thought of me all during the process of making it.  I know she stressed over the fact that it might not turn out perfect, and may have had to correct mistakes and start again at least once.  It is a gift that is mine alone and no one has an item identical to it.  Even if she made one for several friends, no two will be exactly alike!  I believe a hand made gift is a gift that is totally made with love for the person that will receive it.  I love hand made gifts,  they are the best gifts of all!

Here are a few of my favorites!

This is a gift I received from my soon to be daughter in law.  She took the time to hand embroider this teapot for me.  She knows I collect them and love tea.  Not only is this a very thoughtful gift strait from her heart, but also took time and patience to make.  I know she had me in mind while making it and put much love into every stitch.   I love it and proudly keep it on display in my home.  It is a constant reminder that I have this wonderful person in my life and makes me smile when I am having a bad day.  I love it Amber and I love you!

This was a "surprise gift" from my sister.   Surprise gifts are my favorite!   She designed her own pattern and crocheted this bag for me.   She knows how much I love the Tennessee Vols and lined it with Vol fabric and added an orange and white ribbon, Tennessee Vol colors.   I was thrilled when she presented me this bag. The thought that she wanted to give me a gift from her heart just to let me know she loves me and was thinking of me, makes my heart swell with pride and joy.  I love it SusyQ and I love you!

This bag was another surprise gift! This time from my daughter. We always go shopping together on Black Friday and this year she presented me with this special I love you gift!   It is beautiful and I carry it with pride.  She has a full time job and is busy raising 3 sons, but still found the time and money to make me one of the most special gifts I have ever received!   It is also her own pattern and I think the embellishments are just darling and perfect!  I love it Carrie Lynn, and I love you!

This is a gift that touches my heart every Christmas.   It is probably the most precious hand made gift I have ever received!  My 10 year old grandson made this for me when he was 6.   He presented it to me when he came up on Christmas Eve that year and it surprised me and made me so happy that it almost made me cry.  The fact that he wanted to make me something during Christmas project time at school just leaves me speechless. I treasure this gift, always display it in a prominent place during Christmas, and would just be crushed if  anything should happen to it.  Thanks Ryano, I love it and I love you!

All these gifts mean so very much to me,  in my personal opinion, nothing is as great as a personal, hand made gift from someone you love. Don't get me wrong, I love those store bought gifts too!  They contain a lot of thought and love also.

So if someone presents you with a hand made gift this year I hope you realize how much you mean to them,  and remember how much love and thought went in to making the gift!

Meet Me On Monday

Hello and Happy December!   I am so excited about it being December!   I am working hard at sewing and getting a lot of Christmas things made and  I have not been free to post as often as I would like.   Hopefully that will change as of December 16th.   I will have seventeen days of Christmas Vacation starting that day!   I hope to have more time to post and read!

Have you put your tree up?   I have not, I usually have it up the day after Thanksgiving, but this year has just been too hectic!   I Hope to have it up before the Grands and my daughters come up for my "Birthday Weekend"! My birthday is December 19th and we get together on the nearest weekend and have a big ole slumber party and make Christmas decorations.   I love that weekend and look forward to it all year!    I Must have my tree up before then!

Meet Me On Monday  December 5

I love this blog hop!   I missed it last week and felt lost all week long!   I will try not to let that happen again.

Meet Me On Monday is a blog hop sponsored by Never Growing Old.  Click on the link to join it or read about it.   It really is a fun way to make new friends and discover things about the friends you have already made!

Every week Never Growing Old post 5 questions and everyone joining in the hop answers them.  This week's questions are:

1.  Monday's are _________?
2.  What is your favorite kind of milkshake?
3.  What monthly bill do you most dislike paying?
4.  How many email addresses do you use on a regular basis?
5.  What color lights are on your Christmas Tree?

Here are my answers:

1.  Monday's are the worst.  They totally suck!  I can never sleep on Sunday night and I know it is just pure dread!  I Hate Monday's!   I must admit though, Meet Me On Monday does help make it a little better :)

2.  My favorite milkshake is chocolate!  It has been a very long time since I have had one and now that I have thought about, I think it is time to change that! I may just have one tomorrow!

3.  I hate to admit this, but I never pay the bills at our house,  my husband makes out all the checks and pays all the bills,  but it irks me every time I go grocery shopping.  I am constantly thinking about all the things we could have if we didn't have to eat!  LOL  So I have to say the grocery bill is my least favorite!

4.  I have three email addresses that I use on a regular basis.  My Gmail is the one I use the most simply because it notifies me on my desktop when I get new email.  I like that!

5.   A Christmas tree with all clear lights is my favorite, but the Bobster likes multicolored lights and being the kind and sweet person that I am, our main tree has multicolored lights, but I do have a small tree that I put in the dining room that has all clear lights  :)
The Best of both worlds!
Hope to see you again next Monday!

Happy Monday and happy sewing!
